Since 1982, The Community Kitchen of North Iowa, Inc. has served people in our local communities.

Our statement of mission is simple and basic:
The Community Kitchen works to meet the nutritional, social, emotional, and educational hungers of people in the North Iowa area.

We are located in Mason City and serve a seven-county area of North Central Iowa.

We provide a daily/noon/free/balanced meal six days a week, including Saturdays.

In addition, evening meals are served Monday through Thursday.

There is no means testing for our services, and we serve people regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, age, gender, handicap, religion, political affiliation, or ability to pay.

Our History

The Community Kitchen was founded in February, 1982 by a group of concerned ministers and lay people under the leadership of Rev. Lavern Hanson.

Five years later, in March of 1987, The Community Kitchen Of North Iowa, Inc., was established as an independent, nonprofit corporation, which seeks to meet the long and short term needs of hungry people and children throughout North Iowa.

The Kitchen was licensed under the Iowa Restaurant Code in 1990 to insure the quality of the meals and the cleanliness of the facility.

In April, 1996, The Kitchen moved from quarters in the Salvation Army building to our own facility at 606 North Monroe in Mason City, Iowa.
